Fabric Postcards – wishing upon a star!

March 24, 2012

This week, it has been time to make fabric postcards.   An old and special friend soon to be in surgeon’s hands, needs I feel,  some wishes upon a star for her recovery to good health again.   This postcard – with its very special star – was made today to mail to her at hospital.  This was created with purchased printed polyester, overlaid with a gorgeous lace flower, and machine embroidered with orange polyester thread.  My special message to her is handwritten on the fabric back.

If you are wondering how the other Postcards were made, I used Polysol dyes to create the backgrounds, then stitched and beaded to create more imagery.  I am wondering which one you like best - and of

course I am curious as to your reason for your choice.

As you can see landscapes still emerge from my fingers – maybe I will move onto other imagery soon….I wonder.

Teaching assignment for Quilters’ Guild of NSW Inc.

February 12, 2010

Held in the Guild’s office – Pitt St, Sydney – on 6/2/10 – we all had a very creative day.  Playing with Angelina, Crystalina, Metallic Foils sparked off these creative minds.

Starting this workshop was all GO GO GO!

Their enthusiasm to discover what goodies were in the kit that I provided for them nearly overshot the runway!!!   We launched into these intriguing products, learnt how to apply them and the differences between standard, metallic,   hotfix fibres.   They impressed me with how readily they dived into applying these products into either a landscape or abstract piece of art.

The day ended with lots of smiles and a bag full of good work to finish at home.

This one-day workshop was a great activity and I can’t wait to see where these ladies take their adventures with these fibres and foils.

Wilpena Spirit Girl POSTCARD

Wilpena Spirit Girl POSTCARD

I have been given a new title! Intriguingly, it is one that fits my secret inner dormant psyche! And that is not all….look at the wild costumery – I love it!

Kaite, my multi-talented fibre friend sent me this postcard which arrived in my mailbox today. Not only was it a surprize to find this left by the postie, the astonishingly surprize element is the spirit that has emerged from within this gift. Kaite has somehow hooked into my love of the Flinders Ranges land and its people, by creating this gorgeous dolly – all decked out with beaded hair, wired necklace, sparkly anklet, and stunningly beautiful “clothing”. Do take a look at Kaite’s blog – click on her Yarngarden site – I am sure you will delighted to see more of her work.

What a joy this is to my psyche. Mmmmmm….maybe I need to look at “refreshing” my wardrobe…..is it time for more colour?

Yum yum – rumble goes my tum tum!

Special birthday cake

Special birthday cake

After a hard day’s work today, I came home to find this cupcake in my letterbox!!!!! This is a special birthday treat from my on-line fibre friend Kaite. Just take a look at the TLC that has gone into creating this gorgeous birthday postcard…..comprising beading beautifully added to a collage of paper, fabric, yarns, and foil – all ingredients for a high-rise cupcake that wants me to want to eat it. This is one cullinary delight, which being a colourful reminder of my birthday, will take pride of place on my pin-up board in my sewing room.

As my world of on-line fibre friendships open up, I am amazed by the support and friendship that is encountered along the way. It certainly adds another dimension to creativity, learning, and friendship – and loads of FUN.

Queen size quilt using stack and whack technique

Queen size quilt using stack and whack technique

As our slightly spoilt airedale terrier cannot resist occasional visits to (not hers) bed, fabric colours were selected with this need in mind.

This queen-size quilt was based upon the Stack & Whack technique – of many layers of the same piece of fabric being cut so that exactly the same profiles appeared in six pieces.   These were then pieced in uniform fashion and as you can see, many surprizes appeared.  So it was an intriguing quilt to make.

Although I made this quilt about 4 years ago, and it still is intact despite a “few” visits by our loved doggy, I thought it deserved to be posted for you to see.   You see, it has been a rather quiet time for my creativity due to my loved feline – a Tonkinese female – being quite ill ….. good news though….she is recovering.   Has her own little bed with warm fluffy blankets in a corner of my sewing room.   Now that she is improving she likes to “inspect” my pieces of fabrics – you know those ones I have spent some time laying out carefully in a purrrticular order…..!

Good news!  -  I have nearly finished a postcard for a Aus/NZ postcard challenge, that will soon appear on my blog.   So please watch this space … in a couple of days time.
